Labuan Bajo — Komodo International Airport runway-end obstacles require cut-and-fill work estimated at IDR 60 billion (about US$3.6 million), according to Komisi V DPR RI during a working visit on 9 October 2026.
The obstacles are located at both ends of the runway, the parliamentary commission said. The proposed work involves cutting and filling land to meet aviation-safety requirements.
Lasarus delivered the assessment during the visit, according to POS-KUPANG.COM. The report identified Komodo Airport as an important aviation facility for Labuan Bajo, but did not state a construction start date or a confirmed funding decision.
Why the runway issue matters to Labuan Bajo readers
Runway-end obstacles concern the safety area around aircraft operations rather than only the pavement surface. Addressing them could affect how the airport manages future operations, particularly as the commission also identified runway widening as a need for larger aircraft.
The report said the airport’s runway condition and possible widening should be considered alongside the obstacle-removal work. It did not specify the obstacles’ dimensions, identify the land parcels involved or provide a timetable for the cut-and-fill project.
The report also did not state that flights had been suspended or that the airport had closed. No next step beyond the proposed work and estimated budget was reported.
