Kupang — BMKG, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, warned coastal communities in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) about possible tidal flooding from 8 to 10 October 2026.
The warning covers coastal areas of Flores-Alor, Sabu-Raijua, Sumba and Timor-Rote, according to BMKG and reports citing its Tenau Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station. The agency linked the risk to the new-moon phase on 10 October 2026, which could raise maximum sea levels.
BMKG said its early warning was in force from Thursday, 8 October, to Saturday, 10 October. Residents in affected coastal areas were urged to remain alert, prepare for the effects of maximum tides and follow the latest maritime-weather information.
Why it matters to readers
Flores-Alor is among the coastal areas named in the warning, placing communities and maritime activity in parts of Flores within the affected zone. Tidal flooding occurs when high seawater enters low-lying coastal land, and local conditions can also be influenced by wind and wave height.
BMKG advised people in affected areas to monitor weather and tide developments. Its coastal warning document also identifies NTT coastal areas including Flores-Alor, Sumba, Timor-Rote and Sabu-Raijua as locations with potential tidal flooding during the October period.
Residents can seek updated maritime-weather information through BMKG’s NTT maritime service and its local contact channels, as stated in the agency’s advisory.
