Labuan Bajo — Indonesia’s House of Representatives Commission V said on 9 October 2026 that clearing obstacles at both ends of Komodo International Airport’s runway should be treated as a priority for flight safety.
Why it matters: Travellers entering Labuan Bajo through Komodo International Airport may see future infrastructure work aimed at addressing runway obstacles and supporting larger aircraft.
Commission V chairman Lasarus made the statement during a working visit to Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, according to Pos Kupang. The required work, involving cut-and-fill earthworks, was estimated at about Rp60 billion.
Lasarus said the obstacle-clearance work was directly connected to aviation safety and should be addressed promptly. The airport serves as a main entry point for visitors to Labuan Bajo.
Other airport needs
Airport officials also identified runway widening as a longer-term requirement to support larger aircraft, Pos Kupang reported. A parliamentary working-visit document separately lists runway extension, apron expansion and taxiway construction among proposed development needs.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s airport data lists Komodo’s runway as 2,750 metres long and 45 metres wide. The official record also lists two 90-by-90-metre runway-end safety areas.
The parliamentary document says obstacle cutting is needed in the approach and transition areas of runway 17. It also identifies a proposed 100-metre by 45-metre runway extension and facilities intended to support a cargo terminal.
