Sikka Regent, Deputy Move to Tents After Flores Quake Damage

Maumere — Sikka’s regent and deputy regent moved their offices into tents on Aug. 31 after earthquake damage restricted use of the regency headquarters in Maumere, according to FloresPos.net and other reports on the Aug. 15 quake. The temporary setup was meant to keep government services running while repairs and safety checks continued.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Flores on Aug. 15 at about 05:48 WITA, according to contemporaneous reporting on the disaster. Multiple reports said the quake damaged government offices, homes and other public facilities across eastern Flores, with Sikka among the affected areas.

FloresPos.net reported that the main three-storey Sikka regency building and two adjacent two-storey buildings were damaged, leading officials to limit their use. In separate reporting, Simon Subandi Supriadi, the deputy regent, said cracks and other structural damage had been found in parts of the complex.

Services shifted to tents

Units from the regency secretariat were moved to BNPB tents set up in the compound yard, according to FloresPos.net. The report said public services would continue from temporary facilities, while offices with only light damage remained in operation.

Other reporting after the quake also described emergency tents and temporary shelters being used in Sikka and elsewhere in Flores as residents and officials tried to resume basic activity after the disaster. BNPB and other reports said the quake damaged public buildings and displaced thousands across the island.

The temporary arrangement was described as continuing through Sept. 11, the end of the emergency-response period mentioned in the report. No later update in the sources reviewed confirmed whether the tents remained in use after that date or whether the damaged buildings had been reopened.
