Ruteng — A shallow earthquake struck northeast of Manggarai on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). BMKG said the earthquake was felt at intensity II–III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale in Manggarai and Nagekeo.
BMKG said the epicentre was at 8.27° south latitude and 120.63° east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The agency classified it as a shallow earthquake caused by the Flores Back-Arc Thrust, with an upward or thrust-fault movement.
BMKG said tsunami modelling found no tsunami potential. The earthquake formed part of the aftershock sequence following the Flores earthquake on 15 August 2026 at 05:58:23 WIB, or 06:58:23 WITA (UTC+8).
Why it matters to Komodo readers
The shaking was reported in Manggarai and Nagekeo, two districts on Flores that are connected to travel routes serving eastern Flores and the wider Komodo region. BMKG’s intensity assessment means the movement was felt by many people and was noticeable indoors, with windows, doors or walls reported to have made sounds.
By 05:00 WIB on 3 November 2026, or 06:00 WITA (UTC+8), BMKG had monitored aftershocks since the August earthquake. The largest recorded aftershock had a magnitude of 6.2.
BMKG advised people to avoid cracked or damaged buildings. The agency said it would continue monitoring the aftershock activity and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public.
