Reok Expands Quake Damage Checks as Aid Flows into Manggarai

Reok — — Local authorities in Reok subdistrict, Manggarai, are expanding field checks on homes and public facilities damaged in the 15 August 2026 Flores earthquake while distributing basic supplies and shelter assistance to affected residents, according to local media and government agencies.

The 7.7-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Flores on 15 August, triggering tsunami waves and damaging buildings across several regencies including Manggarai. BMKG, Indonesia’s meteorological agency, reported tsunami arrival at Reo in Manggarai with peak wave heights above one metre and classified the shaking in parts of Manggarai, including Reok, at intensity III on the Modified Mercalli scale.

Damage checks in Reok

Flores Pos reported that teams under the Reok subdistrict administration have intensified verification of damaged houses and public facilities in recent days, visiting residents in several urban wards and villages that were hit by the quake. The campaign is aimed at producing validated records of damaged properties as a basis for reconstruction and further assistance.

According to the same outlet, inspectors are moving across Reok’s network of urban wards and rural villages, with visits underway or planned in areas such as Mata Air, Reo, Baru and Wangkung urban wards and Salama and Ruis villages. Officials have not yet released consolidated figures for the number of households or public facilities inspected, nor a breakdown of damage categories.

Nationally, the disaster agency BNPB has reported that more than 50,000 houses across seven affected regencies had passed through verification and validation by early September, representing just over half of the initial damage data set. Local verification in Reok forms part of this wider effort to reconcile initial damage reports with on-the-ground assessments.

Emergency supplies and shelter

Alongside damage checks, authorities and humanitarian groups continue to distribute aid in Manggarai, including Reok. Flores Pos and other outlets have reported shipments of food staples and household items to Reok and neighbouring areas, channelled through national logistics hubs and local posts.

BNPB stated that hundreds of tons of basic supplies—such as rice, instant food, drinking water, hygiene kits, tents and other non-food items—have been flown into Flores via Labuan Bajo and Maumere since the disaster, before being dispatched onward to districts including Manggarai. A naval vessel carrying presidential relief packages, family tents and larger refugee tents has also been sent to Reok to reinforce local stocks, according to national coverage of the response.

Local organisations are supplementing government efforts. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) branch in Manggarai has erected tents at several evacuation posts, assisted with rapid assessments in Reok and other hard-hit subdistricts, and distributed clean water and family kits to displaced residents. Faith-based charities and community groups have delivered food, cooking supplies and hygiene items to camps and self-evacuation sites in Manggarai and Manggarai Timur.

Human impact and continuing needs

The Reok subdistrict administration previously reported multiple fatalities and injuries from the quake, alongside extensive damage to homes, businesses and public facilities, while stressing that building damage data remained incomplete as attention focused first on casualties and medical care. Across Flores, provisional national figures from BMKG and BNPB point to dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries and tens of thousands of damaged houses and public facilities, with verification still ongoing.

Officials say continued field assessments in places like Reok are intended to clarify the scale of destruction and guide reconstruction planning, including decisions on financial support for rebuilding and long-term shelter solutions. For now, residents in the subdistrict remain dependent on a mix of government aid and community solidarity as they repair homes and adapt to life after the earthquake.
