Labuan Bajo — Long-term coral monitoring around Komodo National Park uses a standardised survey of 185 reef sites every two years, designed to track changes in reef condition across different locations and over time, according to park documents and partner reports.
The programme was developed with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in the mid‑1990s as part of a broader marine conservation effort. Early results from surveys in 1996 and 1998 showed that broad-scale reef destruction had halted and that average live hard-coral cover was beginning to increase. Subsequent technical reports indicate that the biennial monitoring continued through at least 2006, with further work reported in 2009, but publicly available summaries focus mainly on the earlier phases of recovery.
How the reef surveys work
Komodo’s coral monitoring protocol is described in park reports and regional conservation publications. Each of the 185 sites is surveyed at three depths: about 4 metres by snorkellers and 8 and 12 metres by scuba divers. All observers work from the same speedboat, following fixed sites that are re‑located by GPS. With a minimum of 12 sites surveyed per week and at least two monitoring weeks each month, park documents state that 24 sites can be covered monthly and that a full cycle of 185 sites should take around eight to nine months. Over one two‑year cycle, the programme generates 2,775 observations of reef status across the monitored sites.
This method gives managers a repeatable way to compare sites and depths and to detect trends in live hard‑coral cover. Because the same sites are revisited, results can be mapped to show where damage from destructive fishing or other pressures has been most intense.

Reports prepared by park staff and TNC for the period 1996–1998 conclude that overall destruction of coral reefs in and around Komodo National Park had been stopped and that a slow rehabilitation had begun. Across the 185 sites, average live hard-coral cover rose from about 16% in 1996 to about 20% in 1998, while soft-coral cover increased modestly and a hard‑coral mortality index declined. Inside the park, live coral cover increased from roughly 15% to 19%, and outside the park from about 17% to 23%.
These documents attribute the change primarily to a sharp drop in dynamite fishing from 1996 onwards, linked to enforcement, community engagement and shifts from low‑value local fisheries to higher‑value live‑fish export. Later park and partner publications refer to biennial monitoring at the 185 sites continuing into the 2000s and note further increases and stabilisation in coral cover at many locations. However, the most widely accessible reports emphasise trend summaries rather than site‑by‑site data, and they do not provide a single, up‑to‑date figure for current average coral cover across all monitored reefs.
Rehabilitation trials and strong-current sites
In areas where reefs were severely damaged and natural recovery was considered unlikely without intervention, experimental restoration has been carried out with university partners, including research led by scientists affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. Studies in heavily bombed sites assessed whether adding stable hard‑substrate structures in strong‑current environments could accelerate coral recovery despite limited natural attachment surfaces.
Peer‑reviewed work from these trials indicates that, while some degraded reefs show little recovery even over six years, carefully designed structures can improve coral recruitment and growth in suitable conditions. Publicly available summaries focus on methods and ecological responses rather than listing all restoration locations or long‑term outcomes for each site.
Why the monitoring record matters
The 185‑site, two‑year survey cycle gives park managers and researchers a framework for distinguishing short‑term fluctuations from longer‑term change, provided the fixed locations and sampling methods are maintained. Comparing live hard coral with dead coral, soft coral and other bottom types helps indicate whether particular reefs are rebuilding, remaining degraded or shifting toward alternative habitats.
