BNPB verifies 51,591 Flores homes as recovery planning advances

Labuan Bajo — Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency has verified 51,591 homes affected by the magnitude 7.7 Flores earthquake, equal to 50.39% of the 102,384 houses initially listed for assessment across seven regencies, according to RRI and a presidential office report.

The figures, first reported on Sept. 7, show 2,382 homes classified as severely damaged, 7,276 as moderately damaged, 14,177 as lightly damaged and 27,756 as undamaged, according to RRI’s report citing BNPB official Berton SP Panjaitan.

President Prabowo Subianto reviewed the response in a limited meeting on Sept. 7, where BNPB reported that emergency operations were entering the transition from response to rehabilitation and reconstruction, according to the presidential secretariat.

Why the verification matters

The verification process is meant to match physical damage assessments to named households and addresses, helping officials avoid duplicate claims and direct aid to the right families, according to BNPB as quoted by RRI.

BNPB and local governments are also checking duplicate records, unverified entries and additional houses found during field work, while preparing the post-disaster needs assessment, or Jitupasna, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction plan, or R3P, according to RRI and the presidential office.

RRI reported that the seven affected regencies are Manggarai Barat, Manggarai, Manggarai Timur, Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende and Sikka. The same report said West Manggarai had nearly completed its initial dataset, while verification was still under way in other areas.

Recovery planning moves ahead

The presidential secretariat said essential services including electricity, telecommunications, fuel, clean water, roads, health care and education had largely been restored, while residents with minor to moderate home damage had begun returning.

RRI also reported that the East Nusa Tenggara provincial government was pushing officials to finish damage records quickly so recovery proposals could be submitted, with temporary shelters expected to be built first near affected communities.

The housing data are being used to guide repairs, reconstruction and shelter planning as local governments move into the recovery phase, according to the official and regional reports.
