Sumbawa — BMKG warned of waves reaching up to 4 metres in Indonesian waters from 12–15 October 2026, with moderate waves of 1,25–2,5 metres also possible in other areas.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the highest waves could affect waters from the western Indian Ocean off Sumatra to the southern coasts of Java, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The warning was issued through BMKG’s official information on Sunday (11/10/2026).

The forecast covers 12–15 October 2026. BMKG attributed the conditions to strengthening wind patterns, particularly around the southern Indian Ocean. Winds north of the equator were generally forecast from southeast to southwest at 6–20 knots, while winds south of the equator were expected from east to southeast at 8–26 knots.

Travellers using sea transport and people crossing affected waters were advised to monitor maritime conditions before travelling. BMKG also urged fishermen to remain alert to moderate waves of 1,25–2,5 metres in several Indonesian waters.

Why it matters to sea travellers

Waves of up to 4 metres can disrupt crossings and create difficult conditions for smaller vessels. The forecast includes the southern waters of Bali and NTB, areas used by ferries and other sea transport serving eastern Indonesia.

The listed high-wave areas also include the western Indian Ocean off Aceh, the Nias Islands, the Mentawai Islands, Bengkulu and Lampung, as well as waters south of Banten, West Java, Central Java, the Special Region of Yogyakarta and East Java.

The warning period ends on 15 October 2026. Travellers should follow the maritime updates issued by BMKG and check conditions before using affected sea routes.
