Labuan Bajo — East Nusa Tenggara recorded 29,851 foreign tourist visits in July 2026, up 18.67% from July 2025 and 2.40% higher than June 2026, according to provincial tourism statistics published by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and reported by regional media.
The BPS tables measure recorded foreign tourist visits, or kunjungan wisman, as border entries rather than individual people. The figures capture how many times foreign visitors entered the province through air, sea or land crossings.
BPS East Nusa Tenggara reported that most foreign visitors arrived via land border posts, while air arrivals contributed a smaller share and sea arrivals were negligible. The data highlight the importance of cross-border movement with Timor-Leste in the province’s tourism profile.
Three national markets dominated July’s foreign visits. Timor-Leste accounted for 22,762 recorded visits, followed by Malaysia with 1,533 and China with 1,475, according to BPS data cited by local media. The predominance of Timor-Leste reflects the role of overland travel rather than long-haul holiday arrivals.
July tourism and hotel performance
BPS also reported strong domestic travel within East Nusa Tenggara in July, with more than one million domestic tourist trips recorded across the province. Regional coverage citing the same tables notes that domestic trips rose slightly from June and were modestly higher than in July 2025.
Outbound trips by Indonesian residents departing from East Nusa Tenggara reached over 10,000 in July, showing a double-digit increase both month on month and year on year. The increase points to a gradual normalization of travel patterns from the province to other destinations.
Hotel data show that star-rated properties benefited most from July’s tourism demand. BPS figures summarized by local media put the average room occupancy rate at 54.55% for star-rated hotels in East Nusa Tenggara. That was 7.54 percentage points higher than June and 7.06 points above July 2025.
Non-star hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 20.45% across the province, slightly above June and significantly higher than the same month a year earlier. The data indicate that formal hotels, rather than budget or informal accommodation, captured the bulk of overnight demand.
According to BPS figures cited in regional reports, star-rated hotels in East Nusa Tenggara hosted 79,578 guests in July. More than half were domestic travelers, and the average length of stay for all guests was around 1.7 nights.
Manggarai Barat leads star-hotel occupancy
Manggarai Barat, which includes Labuan Bajo and the gateway to Komodo National Park, recorded the highest star-hotel occupancy in the province at 77.09%, based on BPS data presented by local media. The figure suggests that hotels in and around the regency’s main tourism areas operated close to three-quarters full on average.
Other districts such as Sumba Barat and Sumba Timur followed with star-hotel occupancy rates in the mid-40% range. In contrast, Kota Kupang posted one of the lowest star-hotel occupancy levels in the province.
While Manggarai Barat’s hotel performance underscores strong demand around Labuan Bajo and Komodo, the available BPS provincial tables do not break down foreign visitor counts by destination. The July statistics therefore show overall tourism and hotel trends for East Nusa Tenggara, but they do not quantify how many foreign visitors specifically stayed in Labuan Bajo or visited Komodo National Park.
