National Police send 5.5 tons of aid to Labuan Bajo after Flores quake

Labuan Bajo — The Indonesian National Police sent 5.5 tons of relief supplies to Labuan Bajo for earthquake victims in Flores, with the goods to be sorted at the Manggarai Barat Police headquarters before distribution to evacuation posts, according to the National Police news site and local broadcaster RRI.

The shipment included staple foods, cooking oil, milk for mothers and infants, and cooking equipment for field kitchens at shelters, the sources said. A separate aid delivery from the Central Java Regional Police also arrived in Labuan Bajo and was taken to the same police headquarters for handling.

The earthquake that triggered the relief effort struck Flores on 15 August 2026, and official police reporting described it as a magnitude 7.7 event that caused damage to hotels and public facilities in Labuan Bajo. BNPB later said aid was being channelled through logistics posts in Labuan Bajo and Maumere as part of the wider response.

Police-led distribution

Police public-relations officer Kombes Pol Bayu Suseno said the food packages would be delivered through police stations in affected areas, including both formal evacuation shelters and independently run posts, according to RRI.

The aid was described as the second shipment sent by the National Police chief after the quake. Police also said they had collected data on evacuees’ needs, including tarpaulins, usable clothing and blankets, for subsequent deliveries.

Police did not publicly detail how many individual packages were being sent to each shelter, but the reported 5.5-ton shipment was intended to support communal kitchens and basic household needs while evacuees remained displaced.

Labuan Bajo has become a major staging point for emergency logistics on western Flores since the quake, with sea and air routes both used to move relief supplies into Manggarai Barat district.

The delivery adds to a broader relief effort that officials said had reached affected areas through air sorties and sea transport, with Labuan Bajo used as one of the main distribution hubs.
