Labuan Bajo — Visitors planning a trip to Kelimutu National Park should check the park’s current entry rules before travelling. A May 2021 notice on the park’s official website said online booking was required at least one day in advance and capped at 390 visitors per day, while later reporting in 2021 said the park had reopened with a different quota and WhatsApp booking system.

The park’s own notice, published on 3 May 2021, said visitors who did not book online would not be served or allowed into the Danau Kelimutu tourist area. It also gave a WhatsApp booking number, 0821 1010 3335, for reservations.

Independent reporting later said the park reopened on 4 September 2021 with online booking still required, and that the daily limit had been set at 300 people under pandemic-era restrictions. The report said reservations had to be made at least one day before arrival and could include up to five people in one group.

What the 2021 booking system required

Under the park’s May 2021 notice, travellers were asked to book online first and do so at least a day before visiting. The same notice said the booking quota was limited to 390 people, and that the reservation channel was WhatsApp.

The later 2021 report said visitors had to send a WhatsApp message, complete the online form, and show the confirmation at the ticket counter. It also said visitors arriving without prior online booking would not be allowed in.

Those details are historical and should not be treated as a current operating rule without checking the park directly. The sources gathered for this article do not establish the park’s live booking status for 2026.

Confirmed 2021 details

  • Official notice date: 3 May 2021
  • Reported reopening date: 4 September 2021
  • Official notice quota: 390 visitors per day
  • Later reported quota: 300 visitors per day
  • Booking channel: WhatsApp, number 0821 1010 3335
  • Advance booking: at least one day before arrival

Why the rules changed that year

In January 2021, local reporting said Kelimutu National Park was temporarily closed for 14 days, and later notices tied reopening and visitor controls to COVID-19 restrictions. By September 2021, the park was open again but still using online registration to manage visitor numbers.

The shift matters for travellers because Kelimutu is a sunrise destination and access rules can affect both timing and group planning. Visitors heading from Moni or Ende should verify entry procedures shortly before departure rather than relying on older instructions.

A practical pre-trip check is to confirm the reservation channel, the current daily quota, opening hours and any health or safety restrictions directly with the park authority. Keep the booking confirmation available on your phone if you receive one.

Bottom line for visitors

For May and September 2021, Kelimutu’s entry system relied on advance online booking, and the park enforced a daily cap on visitor numbers. The official notice and subsequent reporting agree on the need to reserve ahead, but they differ on the quota, which was reported as 390 in the park notice and 300 in later reporting.
