Hotel Jayakarta Labuan Bajo shuts for repairs after NTT quake damage

Labuan Bajo — A four-star hotel in Labuan Bajo has suspended operations for repairs after its front wall and ceiling were badly damaged in the powerful earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday, 15 August 2026, according to local media and Indonesia’s meteorological agency.

The hotel has been identified in multiple reports as Hotel Jayakarta Labuan Bajo, located in Manggarai Barat district on the western tip of Flores. Coverage from Bali-based media described heavy damage on the first floor, with part of the front wall collapsing and ceiling panels falling inside the building. Photographs published by a property news outlet on 15 August showed a breached wall and scattered bricks, with the hotel said to be closed for renovation following the quake.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.0 and later updated its analysis to magnitude 7.7 at a depth of 15 kilometres. BMKG located the epicentre offshore, about 30 kilometres northeast of Nagekeo, and issued a tsunami early warning for parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi.

The 15 August earthquake struck Flores and surrounding islands in the early morning, with BMKG’s initial bulletin issued at 04:58:23 Western Indonesian Time. BMKG later updated its parameters to magnitude 7.7 at a depth of 15 kilometres and confirmed that the tremor was caused by thrust fault activity along the Flores Back-Arc system.

Government and media reports document significant impacts across East Nusa Tenggara, including deaths, injuries and damage to homes, public facilities and tourism infrastructure. BMKG and the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources both recorded shaking in Labuan Bajo strong enough to cause damage to buildings and port facilities. BMKG’s tsunami modelling indicated a potential threat along parts of the Flores and neighbouring coasts, though the tsunami early warning was later lifted.

As of mid-September 2026, a national business outlet citing BMKG data reported more than 15,000 aftershocks in the region since the main event, underscoring continued seismic activity in and around Flores. Authorities have urged residents and visitors in coastal areas of East Nusa Tenggara, including Labuan Bajo, to remain familiar with evacuation routes and to heed official guidance during future seismic events.

Local reports have not provided a detailed reconstruction schedule or a reopening date for Hotel Jayakarta Labuan Bajo.
