Tourism demand in Labuan Bajo is strong but uneven: Manggarai Barat recorded the highest star-hotel occupancy in East Nusa Tenggara at 73.53% in July 2025, while the average stay in the province’s star hotels was 1.64 nights, according to BPS, 2025. That points to solid room demand, but limited visitor time on land.
How full are hotels in Labuan Bajo?
Manggarai Barat’s star hotels recorded a room-occupancy rate of 73.53% in July 2025, the highest among the districts listed by BPS East Nusa Tenggara. The provincial star-hotel rate was 50.95% in the same month, according to BPS, 2025.
The figures measure occupied rooms, not the number of visitors or total tourism revenue. They therefore show accommodation demand, while leaving other parts of the visitor economy—such as marine excursions, restaurants and transport—to separate indicators.
How long do visitors stay?
Guests in star hotels across East Nusa Tenggara stayed an average of 1.64 nights in July 2025, according to BPS, 2025. The province’s non-star hotels recorded an average stay of 1.46 nights in the same month.
A separate March 2025 survey by the Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority found an average length of stay of 2.15 nights among the hotels it surveyed in Labuan Bajo, according to BPOLBF, 2025. The two figures are not directly interchangeable because they cover different areas, hotel groupings and survey periods.
What does this mean for tourism businesses?
The data suggest that accommodation businesses can experience high demand even when the wider economic benefit is constrained by short stays. BPOLBF reported that much of visitors’ time was still tied to sea-based activities, including liveaboard trips, limiting the direct economic impact for businesses and residents on land, according to BPOLBF, 2025.
For operators and investors, occupancy and length of stay answer different business questions: occupancy indicates room use, while length of stay indicates how long demand remains connected to the local economy. Neither measure alone captures jobs, spending or the distribution of tourism income.
What other activity shows the scale of the market?
KSOP recorded 35,000 tourist-ship departures from Labuan Bajo in 2024, up from 30,000 in 2023, according to BPOLBF, 2025. The count is a measure of vessel departures, not unique tourists, and should not be added to hotel-arrival data.
Together, the official indicators describe a market with high star-hotel occupancy, short average stays and substantial marine activity. They provide a clearer picture of operating conditions than a single visitor total, but each statistic must be read according to what it counts.
