How many tourism jobs does Labuan Bajo support?
Labuan Bajo’s tourism workforce grew in 2025, but employment, hotel activity and Komodo park visits measure different parts of the business economy and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Tourism employment in Labuan Bajo is growing, but the available official figures describe the destination at different levels. Ministry of Tourism data compiled from BPS put employment in Labuan Bajo among Indonesia’s priority destinations at a 15.23% year-on-year increase in 2025, while local BPS statistics separately track accommodation and transport activity in Manggarai Barat.
How many tourism workers does Labuan Bajo have?
The Ministry of Tourism’s destination-workforce series recorded a 15.23% year-on-year increase in Labuan Bajo in 2025, according to Databoks, which reported data from BPS processed by the ministry’s Data and Information Systems Bureau, 2026.
The figure refers to workers associated with a priority tourism destination. It should not be read as a payroll count for hotels, boat operators or other businesses in Labuan Bajo alone, because the published result does not provide a local occupation-by-occupation total.
What does the local data measure?
BPS Manggarai Barat publishes separate tourism and transport indicators, including accommodation activity and hotel occupancy, according to its September 29, 2025 tourism release. These measures show how tourism infrastructure is being used, but they are not identical to employment.
Accommodation occupancy measures use of available rooms during a reference period. It does not count all visitors, all tourism workers or revenue across the destination.
Why does the workforce figure matter to operators?
A rise in destination employment indicates that tourism demand is linked to more work across the local economy, but it does not establish how many jobs are permanent, seasonal or directly tied to visitor spending. The ministry’s series therefore works best as a destination-level labour indicator rather than a business-by-business forecast.
Indonesia Travel, the government’s tourism portal, says recreational-boat tourism can create work for nearby fishing communities, including captains and crew, and that waterfront development can generate business opportunities and absorb workers, according to its 2025 material.
What should businesses compare?
Operators and investors need to distinguish three questions: whether the workforce is expanding, whether accommodation capacity is being used, and how many people enter the park. No single figure answers all three.
- Employment growth indicates labour-market expansion.
- BPS accommodation and occupancy data indicate registered lodging activity.
- Park-entry data indicate visits to Komodo National Park, not unique travellers or total spending in Labuan Bajo.
That distinction matters because Komodo National Park recorded 432,217 visits in 2025, including 340,048 foreign visitors, according to Expat Life Indonesia’s January 13, 2026 report citing the park authority. Park visits cannot be treated as a direct count of tourism jobs or overnight guests.
