Flores Timur’s smallholder agriculture is still measurable through several crops, but the official figures show a mixed picture rather than one dominant harvest. In 2023, cassava recorded 29,159 tonnes and maize 14,703 tonnes, while 2024 figures in the regency’s statistical tables extend the record for perennial crops, including coconut.

Which food crops dominate Flores Timur?

The main food crops recorded for Flores Timur are rice, maize, groundnuts, cassava, sweet potatoes and mung beans, according to the Flores Timur Statistics Office’s 2024 regional profile. For 2023, cassava produced 29,159 tonnes and maize produced 14,703 tonnes, making them the largest figures among the six crops listed in that profile.

How much rice does the regency produce?

Rice production was 6,001 tonnes in 2023, from a harvested area of 2,827 hectares, according to the Flores Timur Statistics Office’s 2024 publication. The same table records 582 tonnes of groundnuts, 297 tonnes of mung beans and 77 tonnes of sweet potatoes in 2023.

What does the newer plantation data show?

The 2025 Flores Timur regency statistics publication includes plantation data for 2020–2024. It records coconut production at 10.62 thousand tonnes in 2023 and presents 2024 figures marked as provisional, showing that perennial crops remain part of the regency’s agricultural base.

Why do the figures matter beyond farming?

Agriculture is one part of a wider provincial economy rather than a standalone measure of Flores’ prosperity. BPS East Nusa Tenggara reported that the province’s economy grew 4.88 percent year on year in the third quarter of 2025, while the provincial investment office recorded Flores Timur investment of 23,420,507,392 rupiah for 2025.

These figures describe different things: crop output is a physical production measure, economic growth is a provincial change in activity, and investment is recorded capital value. They should not be combined into a single estimate of Flores Timur’s agricultural worth.
