PLN’s First NTT EV Charging Station Operates at Labuan Bajo’s Kampung Ujung

Labuan Bajo — State-owned utility PT PLN (Persero) has been operating Nusa Tenggara Timur’s first public electric vehicle charging station at the Kampung Ujung tourism parking area in Labuan Bajo since December 2021, offering both DC fast charging at 50 kilowatts and AC charging at 22 kW, according to a company statement.

PLN describes the facility as a self-service station where drivers connect and charge their vehicles by following instructions at the site.

The station is intended to support wider adoption of battery-electric vehicles in NTT, particularly in Labuan Bajo, by providing a designated charging point in one of the town’s main tourist parking areas.

What the station provides

According to PLN’s press release, the Kampung Ujung station is equipped with two charging modes designed for vehicles with different requirements.

DC fast charging is rated at 50 kW, while the AC connection is rated at 22 kW.

PLN states that charging a vehicle from 0% to 100% can take up to a maximum of two hours at the station, depending on the battery’s capacity and other technical factors.

The two-hour figure is presented by PLN as an indicative maximum and not a guaranteed charging time for every vehicle.

Actual charging duration will vary according to battery size, condition and the vehicle’s compatibility with the available connectors.

In its announcement, PLN also compared the efficiency of electric vehicles with fuel-powered vehicles, using a benchmark that equates one litre of fuel with around 1.3 kilowatt-hours of electricity, but the company did not specify user tariffs or provide journey cost comparisons for Labuan Bajo.

Access and operating details

PLN promotes the Labuan Bajo facility as the first SPKLU in NTT and part of its effort to accelerate the electric-vehicle ecosystem in the province.

The station gives electric-vehicle users a fixed charging point in a visitor-oriented area of Labuan Bajo, and later official and media reports have continued to list the Kampung Ujung SPKLU among key charging locations in Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

However, the available statements do not disclose detailed operating hours, payment methods, booking procedures or queue management rules for the site.

PLN’s release does not identify the number of charging bays or list the specific vehicle models and connector standards supported.

Those details are likely to affect how residents, rental operators and tourism businesses can rely on the facility during busy periods as electric-vehicle use grows.

Context and expansion plans

In its December 2021 announcement, PLN’s Director of Commerce and Customer Management, Bob Saril, said the first SPKLU in NTT was expected to encourage broader use of battery-electric vehicles in the province, with Labuan Bajo as a particular focus.

He said PLN planned to keep adding SPKLU locations in NTT so that charging infrastructure would be more evenly distributed and help attract more people to use electric vehicles.

Subsequent government and media reports have noted the presence of the Kampung Ujung SPKLU as part of a wider network of charging stations in Labuan Bajo and other parts of NTT, including facilities installed ahead of international events such as the ASEAN Summit.

The Kampung Ujung station therefore forms part of a broader push by PLN and government agencies to link electric-vehicle infrastructure with tourism destinations and major transport corridors across eastern Indonesia.
