Manggarai Regency — Manggarai Regent Herybertus Geradus Laju Nabit announced on 14 October 2026 that the regency was preparing materials and construction support for 220 emergency classrooms at 130 schools affected by the Flores earthquake.

Why it matters: Students at 130 earthquake-affected schools are intended to receive temporary learning facilities, with each school’s classroom allocation based on damage and learning needs.

The launch took place at SMP Negeri 4 Langke Rembong in Ruteng, according to Obor Timur. The support is intended to keep lessons running while damaged school buildings remain unavailable, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

The initial programme covers 23 early-childhood education units, 96 primary schools and 21 junior secondary schools. It includes public and private institutions, with the number of emergency classrooms assigned to each school based on the severity of building damage and its learning needs.

The assistance consists of roofing sheets, nails and a construction stimulus. Obor Timur reported that the procurement of roofing sheets and nails was backed by funding from the central government.

Part of wider education recovery

The district programme follows broader education-recovery efforts after the 15 August 2026 Flores earthquake. The Education Ministry’s education-financing centre reported that Manggarai had 1,887 damaged classrooms, the highest number among the affected districts listed in its update.

A later update from the ministry’s East Nusa Tenggara education-quality agency said 1,960 affected education units across the province were conducting lessons through emergency arrangements, including tents, open spaces and emergency classrooms. It also said the ministry had distributed 100 emergency classroom tents across affected districts.

The ministry’s update said temporary classrooms should use stronger roofing and locally available materials, with an expected service life of four to six months. It prioritised schools with severe damage and areas entering the rainy season earlier.

For Manggarai’s district-level programme, the immediate next step is the provision of materials and construction support to the 130 schools listed in the first phase. The number of classrooms at each school will depend on verified damage and education requirements.
