Manggarai Barat — The regency is preparing to use proceeds from waste sales to pay BPJS Ketenagakerjaan contributions for informal waste workers, according to reports dated 21 October 2026.

The proposed scheme follows support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which paid contributions for waste workers in Labuan Bajo. The workers are beneficiaries of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Indonesia’s employment social-security programme.

Funding plan aims to sustain coverage

The proposal is intended to sustain social-protection coverage for informal waste workers in Labuan Bajo and elsewhere in Manggarai Barat after the initial contribution support ends.

Manggarai Barat is preparing a waste-sales funding mechanism for the contributions. The initial coverage involved waste workers in Labuan Bajo, while UNDP paid their BPJS Ketenagakerjaan contributions.

Using waste-sale proceeds would provide a local funding arrangement for the workers’ employment social-security coverage. The proposed scheme is expected to extend the contribution support beyond the initial period covered by UNDP and maintain coverage for workers in Labuan Bajo and the wider regency.

The plan concerns informal waste workers, including those working in Labuan Bajo. It links waste sales with payments for BPJS Ketenagakerjaan contributions and is intended to continue protection for workers after the initial support ends.

The value of the contributions, the amount expected from waste sales and a start date for the proposed financing scheme were not stated.
