Festival Golo Koe 2026 blends Catholic ritual and Manggarai culture in Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo — The Golo Koe Festival 2026 opened in Labuan Bajo on 10 August and ran through 15 August, bringing together Catholic worship, Manggarai cultural performances and tourism promotion at Waterfront City Marina, according to local reporting and a tourism authority release.

The festival marked its fifth edition and was again listed among the Top 10 Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) attractions for 2026, according to the Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority, known as BPOLBF, and local media.

BPOLBF said the event was part of a broader effort to strengthen religious tourism across Flores, while festival organisers framed it as a programme linking faith, culture, social action and environmental awareness.

Opening and programme

The festival opened at Marina Waterfront Labuan Bajo on 10 August 2026, with Indonesia’s tourism minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana attending the launch, according to local reports. Coverage of the opening said the programme included adat welcomes and performances by students and cultural groups from the Labuan Bajo area.

Festival materials and event reports said the peak week featured an exhibition of creative-economy and local culinary products, archipelago arts performances, a cultural carnival, Manggarai theatre, Caci, a grand Maria Assumpta Nusantara procession and a closing Mass.

The festival website listed daily highlights from 10 to 15 August, including religious renewal, environmental action, charitable social activities and the central procession on 14 August.

Faith, culture and tourism strategy

BPOLBF said the festival formed part of a destination strategy that connects Catholic religious and cultural sites across Flores, with the authority’s chief executive Andhy M.T. Marpaung describing the island as a place where tourism growth can move alongside local identity and tradition.

Festival organisers said the event was designed to promote sustainable tourism while keeping Manggarai cultural heritage and Catholic devotion at the centre of the programme.

The festival’s own publications and local reports did not provide audited attendance data, hotel-occupancy figures or a post-event economic impact study. The reported programme, however, was clearly structured around Labuan Bajo’s identity as both a tourism gateway and a religious-cultural hub.
