Jakarta — — Indonesian Navy divers recovered three bodies from the sunken passenger vessel Virgo Transport 8 in the Java Sea on Friday, 18 September 2026, as search teams continued operations for more than 120 people still missing, according to officials and media reports.
The victims — two men and one woman — were found inside the capsized ship’s hull by Navy combat divers and search-and-rescue personnel during underwater operations near the wreck site off Masalembo in the Java Sea. The bodies were transferred at sea from the Navy frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai-332 to the search-and-rescue vessel KN SAR Kamajaya and then taken to Banjarmasin for identification by police disaster victim identification teams.
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and Navy officials said the recovery of the three bodies on 18 September brought the confirmed death toll to nine, alongside 108 survivors and 126 people still unaccounted for as of that date. These figures updated earlier counts issued on 14 September, when authorities reported six confirmed deaths, 108 survivors and 129 people missing from a manifest of 243 people on board.
Strong currents complicate underwater search
Authorities said strong currents, winds and waves around the wreck site continued to hinder divers attempting to enter the ship and search compartments inside the hull. Navy and Basarnas officials described the underwater operation as difficult, with divers working in low visibility and strong flow conditions as they sought additional victims.
As of 18 September, search agencies reported deploying multiple ships and aircraft to the area, including Navy vessels and search-and-rescue craft supporting the diving teams and surface sweeps. Family representatives were permitted on board at least one search-and-rescue vessel to observe the operation and its conditions, according to Indonesian media reports.
Casualty figures and manifest data
Indonesian transport officials and media outlets have reported consistent manifest data showing that Virgo Transport 8 was carrying about 243 people when it capsized, including crew, company staff, passengers and vehicle drivers. The vessel was sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when it encountered bad weather and subsequently capsized and sank in the Java Sea on 13 September 2026.
By 14 September, the Transport Ministry and Basarnas reported that 114 people had been found, of whom 108 were alive and six were dead, leaving 129 missing. After the three bodies were recovered on 18 September, Indonesian outlets including Metro TV and Republika reported an updated tally of nine dead, 108 survivors and 126 people still missing. These later figures incorporate the three bodies recovered from inside the hull.
Search assets and official priorities
Basarnas and the Navy said they had reinforced the operation with additional sea and air assets, including more than a dozen vessels and several aircraft tasked with searching the wider area around the wreck and drift zones identified by planners. Officials described the priorities as locating missing passengers, supporting affected families and coordinating with investigators from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), which has opened an inquiry into the sinking.
Transport officials have highlighted existing safety measures for passenger ships, including checks on docking, classification, company and crew documentation, passenger inspections, loading supervision, weather monitoring and verification before sailing permits are issued. The KNKT investigation is expected to examine factors such as weather, loading, stability and crew response, but no preliminary findings had been made public in the reports available as of 20 September 2026.
The sinking of Virgo Transport 8 has drawn attention to maritime safety on the busy Surabaya–Banjarmasin route and in the Masalembo area, which has seen previous shipping incidents, with commentators and officials calling for closer enforcement of regulations and improvements to passenger protection.
