Indonesia’s 2026 southern bluefin tuna quota decision not on legal site

Labuan Bajo — Indonesia’s current southern bluefin tuna quota decision is not listed among the 2026 ministerial regulations on the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries’ online legal database, leaving any 2026 quota amount and related rules unconfirmed from that source as of 20 September 2026.

The Legal Documentation and Information Network of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (JDIH KKP) presents a table of ministerial decisions, including entries from 2026 and earlier years.

In the section for ministerial decisions, the 2026 list shows, among others, Decision No. 69 of 2026 dated 4 September 2026 on verification of fuel distribution at special prices for larger fishing vessels, and decisions on technical guidance for subsidised fuel and the designation of a fishing port in South Sulawesi.

According to that listing, Decision No. 69/2026 concerns verification of consumers and volumes of fuel supplied at special prices to fishing vessels between 30 and 200 gross tonnes, and is recorded as issued and promulgated on 4 September 2026 in Jakarta.

The same JDIH view links back to earlier ministerial decisions, including Decision No. 32 of 2025 and Decision No. 85 of 2025, both titled on the quota for catching southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) and both marked as in force.

What the current legal record shows

On the JDIH KKP consolidated ministerial-decision page, the 2026 entries visible up to mid-September 2026 cover topics such as fuel support, conservation areas, sediment management and internal performance indicators for the ministry.

Separate detail pages for the 2025 quota decisions confirm that Decision No. 32/2025 and Decision No. 85/2025 both set quotas for southern bluefin tuna catches and remain in force, with 32/2025 dated 5 June 2025 and 85/2025 dated 23 December 2025.

Southern bluefin tuna allocations in international fora

Outside national regulations, international allocation tables for southern bluefin tuna indicate that Indonesia has reserved an allowable catch of around 1,336 tonnes per year for 2024–2026, subject to a payback arrangement for past overcatch.

Reports prepared for regional tuna bodies note that Indonesia agreed to repay 91.3 tonnes per year until 2026 under this plan, meaning its effective catch limit is lower than the reserved total.

Executive summaries from international tuna commissions show that the overall total allowable catch for southern bluefin tuna for 2024–2026 is 20,647 tonnes per year, distributed among members including Indonesia.

Implications for fishers

Because the JDIH KKP listing for 2026 does not yet contain a ministerial decision explicitly setting a southern bluefin tuna quota, operators cannot rely on that page alone to identify any new 2026 national quota figure, vessel eligibility rules or landing requirements.
