Kupang — Annual inflation in Kupang was recorded at 2.29% year on year in August 2026, unchanged from July, according to data published by Databoks based on figures from Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS). The rate measures the change in consumer prices between August 2025 and August 2026.

The Databoks release presents Kupang’s annual inflation alongside a macroeconomic table that includes an August 2026 national inflation rate of 3.19% year on year, consistent with national CPI data published by Bank Indonesia. On that basis, Kupang’s headline inflation in August was below the national average.

Personal care and services lead price increases

According to the Databoks summary of BPS data, household spending in Kupang is divided into 11 consumption groups for inflation reporting. Within that structure, the personal care and other services group posted the strongest annual increase.

The Databoks breakdown reports the following year-on-year changes inside that group in August 2026 in Kupang:

  • Other personal care: prices up 37.99% year on year
  • Personal care and other services (group level): up 19.15%
  • Personal care: up 4.04%
  • Other services: unchanged at 0%

These figures describe price changes within the group’s subcategories. According to the Databoks explanation based on BPS methodology, they do not directly show how much each item contributed to Kupang’s overall 2.29% inflation rate, because a contribution calculation requires the expenditure weights used in the consumer price index.

The same Databoks report notes that Kupang’s highest year-on-year inflation in the recent historical series occurred in February 2026 at 3.05%, while the lowest was in January 2025 at 0.7%. The August 2026 rate of 2.29% therefore sits below the reported February peak and above the January 2025 low.

Education group records annual deflation

BPS data cited by Databoks show that the education group in Kupang experienced year-on-year deflation of 6% in August 2026. The decline within that group was driven mainly by secondary education prices, which fell 22.95% from a year earlier.

By contrast, higher education prices increased 0.69% year on year, basic and early-childhood education rose 0.88%, and other education services were up 2.6% in August compared with the same month of 2025. This mix of falling and rising components produced an overall decrease in the education group’s index.

Regional and national inflation context

While the Kupang figures reflect conditions in the city’s consumer market, BPS and regional media reports show that Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) as a province recorded deflation of 0.40% month on month in August 2026, with year-on-year inflation of 2.59%. According to BPS NTT, the monthly deflation was driven mainly by lower prices in the food, beverages and tobacco group, including commodities such as broiler chicken, shallots, tomatoes and cabai rawit.

At the national level, Bank Indonesia’s August 2026 CPI indicator lists an annual inflation rate of 3.19%. In this context, Kupang’s 2.29% year-on-year inflation suggests relatively moderate price pressures compared with the national average, but slightly below the broader provincial figure of 2.59% reported by BPS NTT.

For households and planners in Kupang, the available data confirm that overall inflation remained contained in August, with the sharpest increases occurring in personal care and related services and the education group providing a partial offset through deflation. Further detailed releases from BPS are expected to clarify the month-on-month price movements and the specific contributions of food, transport, housing and other essential categories to the city’s inflation profile.
