BMKG warns of rough seas in Flores and Pantar waters

Kupang — BMKG, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, warned of waves measuring 1,25 to 2,5 metres in several East Nusa Tenggara waters from Tuesday, 22 September, to Wednesday, 23 September 2026.

The warning applied to the southern Alor Strait, Flores-Lamakera Strait, Pantar Strait, waters south of Flores and waters south of Alor-Pantar, according to RRI. Higher waves of 2,5 to 3,5 metres were forecast in waters south of Sumba.

BMKG said the higher waves posed risks to fishing boats, barges and ferries. The report did not state the wind range cited in the candidate text.

The forecast covered the Pantar Strait and waters south of Flores, routes and coastal areas connected with marine activity in the region. The warning period included 23 September 2026, when conditions could affect vessels operating in or crossing the listed waters.

RRI identified BMKG’s Maritime Meteorological Station in Tenau, Kupang, as the source of the warning. A separate BMKG forecast page reported a 3.0m wave potential in waters of the southern Indian Ocean south of East Nusa Tenggara on 23 September 2026.

The available reports state that the forecast covered 22–23 September 2026. They do not state a follow-up measure beyond the warning.
