Ruteng — Two aftershocks north of Ruteng, Manggarai, were felt on Sunday evening, 4 October 2026, according to an analysis by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).
The first earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6. Its epicentre was at sea, 51 kilometres north of Ruteng, at a depth of 4 kilometres. BMKG’s analysis identified the event as part of the Flores aftershock sequence.
A second aftershock measured 4.0. Its epicentre was also at sea, 49 kilometres north of Ruteng, Manggarai, at a depth of 6 kilometres. The two events were reported in the same area north of Ruteng on Sunday evening.
BMKG’s tsunami modelling found that the magnitude-4.6 earthquake did not have tsunami potential. The available account also describes the magnitude-4.0 event as part of the same sequence of aftershocks.
Why the aftershocks matter in Flores
Ruteng is in Flores, and the report places both earthquakes offshore north of Ruteng. Identifying the events as aftershocks provides local context for continued seismic activity in Manggarai and explains why the two tremors were reported together.
The report does not state any tsunami warning or further action arising from the two earthquakes. It records the locations, depths and magnitudes provided in BMKG’s analysis, while noting that the magnitude-4.6 event had no tsunami potential.
