Twin earthquakes strike near Mbay and Ruteng in Flores

Mbay — Two earthquakes were recorded near Mbay and Ruteng in Flores on Friday, 25 September 2026, according to reports citing Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). The Mbay event measured magnitude 2,4 and occurred 37 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at a depth of 9 kilometres. The Ruteng event measured magnitude 3,1 and was recorded offshore 89 kilometres north of Ruteng, Manggarai, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

It placed the epicentre at 8.40 degrees south latitude and 121.51 degrees east longitude.

Its coordinates were given as 7.83 degrees south latitude and 120.61 degrees east longitude.

Both locations are in Flores, within the wider region followed by residents and visitors travelling through eastern Indonesia. The reports described the Ruteng earthquake as occurring at sea and gave no account of damage or tsunami warnings.
