Manggarai Timur extends Flores earthquake emergency status through 26 September

Manggarai Timur — The regency extended its Flores earthquake emergency-response status for a third time for seven days from 20 to 26 September 2026, according to a regional news report.

The decision was made by Regent Agas Andreas and formalised in Regent Manggarai Timur Decree No. HK/164/2026, the report said. The extension covers the district’s emergency response to the Flores earthquake.

BMKG figures cited in the report recorded 17,686 aftershocks by 05:00 WITA on 23 September, including 203 felt events.

Why it matters

Manggarai Timur is on Flores, the island that includes routes and communities connected to tourism in eastern Indonesia. The continuing emergency status indicates that local authorities are still managing earthquake-related risks and impacts in the regency.

During the extension, government services and teaching activities were to continue normally while taking account of disaster conditions and public safety, the report said. Classes were to be held outside buildings designated as temporary learning locations.

The decree allows the emergency-response period to be extended or shortened depending on continuing aftershock activity, according to the report. The latest BMKG figures cited in the report included a largest aftershock magnitude of 6.2, a smallest magnitude of 0.9 and 39 aftershocks above magnitude 5.
