BMKG records 17,442 Flores aftershocks after Nagekeo quake

Mbay — BMKG recorded 17,442 aftershocks in Flores through 10:50 a.m. local time on 22 September 2026, after the main earthquake on 15 August 2026.

The latest count was reported after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the Nagekeo area at 10:36:27 a.m. local time on 22 September. The epicentre was in the sea, 31 kilometres northeast of Mbay, at a depth of 14 kilometres.

Tribun Flores reported that the earthquake was felt most strongly in Nagekeo at intensity IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. It was also felt in Ngada, Sikka and Ende at intensity III, and in Manggarai at intensity II.

Why it matters to Komodo readers

Flores is part of the same eastern Indonesian travel region as Komodo, and the reported aftershock sequence indicates continuing seismic activity on the island. The report did not state that Komodo National Park or its facilities were closed.

According to Tribun Kupang, the largest aftershock recorded in the sequence reached magnitude 6.2. The main earthquake was reported as magnitude 7.7 and occurred on 15 August 2026.
