Local reporting and academic material identify Colol as a coffee-growing area in Lamba Leda Timur and describe it as a major coffee center in Manggarai Timur, yet the available evidence does not consistently provide a single, verified market baseline.

Flores Pos reported on 31 August 2026 that Colol Valley is a coffee-producing area in Manggarai Timur and presented it as a high-potential origin, but the article did not publish hard commercial figures in the draft’s terms such as production volume, prices, buyers, certification or export routes. A 2021 academic article and later local reporting likewise describe Colol as a long-established coffee area, with one study saying the valley was already known as a coffee-producing region and that several varieties are grown there, including arabica and robusta.

That broader picture is consistent with government and local reporting beyond the 2026 Flores Pos piece. Manggarai Timur’s regional government has previously highlighted coffee exports from the regency, and a separate report in 2023 said the Colol coffee festival was used to promote the area’s coffee profile. In 2024 academic work on Colol also described coffee agribusiness as a support for agrotourism in the village.

What can be established

Colol is located in East Manggarai Regency, and the area is associated with coffee cultivation in the highlands of Lamba Leda Timur. Multiple sources describe the valley as a recognized coffee hub in Flores, with varieties including arabica and robusta mentioned in the literature and local coverage.

One study based on East Manggarai data said Colol Village had coffee plantations owned by hundreds of families and could produce coffee in a good year, while another local report said the valley was known for traditional coffee processing and agrotourism. Those references support Colol’s reputation as a coffee origin, but they do not by themselves establish current export performance or verified premium pricing.

The 2026 Flores Pos article is mainly descriptive and historical. It places Colol within the wider history of coffee’s spread from Ethiopia through Asia and Europe, then into the Indonesian archipelago, but that background does not confirm a present-day commercial scale in Colol itself.

For investors, roasters and growers, the key missing layer is standardized business data: current output, farm-gate prices, certification status, processing capacity and documented buyer relationships. Those figures would determine whether Colol’s reputation is translating into a repeatable value chain or remains largely a local quality claim.

Colol’s coffee story matters because East Manggarai has long relied on agriculture alongside tourism, and coffee is one of the region’s better-known commodities. Local government and media coverage have repeatedly used strong language about Colol’s reputation, including festival branding and references to the area’s coffee heritage.
